We recommend the following resource for PE and Languages cross curricular activities. We are planning to use it for a transition project, more about that later.

NKS FRENCH UPSKILLING COURSE
For all teachers, HLTAs and TAs teaching French to year 6 in the Ashford and Shepway partnerships.
This KCC funded up-skilling French course is to be run at the Norton Knatchbull school in the summer term. This is a unique opportunity for all of you who teach French to year 6 to improve your knowledge of the language and to increase your confidence.
This course is aimed at beginners but it would not do any harm if you had some previous, if rusty, knowledge of French! The is a 30 hours course and a small amount of home study will also be expected.
We will use Tout le Monde as a base and will focus on grammar and prononciation as well as methodology. We are giving priority to teachers of year 6 this year and hope to be able to offer it as a rolling programme in the future so that all teachers get the opportunity to improve their skills.
Funding is available from KCC for supply cover.
To register, please contact Anne-Marie ASladden@nks.kent.sch.uk before Friday 1st May 2009.

NEWSLETTER JAN 2009
Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the Norton Knatchbull primary team we would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year!
We are now in our last year before the primary language entitlement in January 2010 and we have been busy preparing a new selection of workshops and meetings for this term.
Regional Support Group Workshop
Our first workshop this term will be run by our colleague and AST Vanessa Marticorena. The workshop is entitled ‘Kinaesthetics and the use of the interactive whiteboard', and will be taking place on Tuesday 20th January 2009, at 16.00, at the Norton Knatchbull School.
The second workshop will take place on Wednesday 25th March 2009, 16.00 at the Norton Knatchbull School and will be run by Nicola Thompson, who teaches at Pluckley School and is one of the two Primary Languages Lead Teacher for Ashford Rural. This workshops will show how the QCA Schemes of Work for Primary Languages can be exploited in the classroom.
We have attached flyers for you to advertise it in your schools. All workshops are free of charge, you just need to register with Anne-Marie: asladden@nks.kent.sch.uk
Language Network Meetings
Our LNG (Language Network Group, ex CNG) meetings are an opportunity for teachers to get up-to-date information on primary languages, as well as the opportunity to express any concern they may have and of course, most importantly, to network with other colleagues.
The Shepway meeting will be held on Wednesday 1st April, 16.00 at the Folkestone Academy and the Ashford meeting at The Norton Knatchbull School on Wednesday 4th March, 16.00.

We have also had a communication from Liz Hitchcock
Dear colleagues
We have the latest list of primary schools signed up on eTwinning. No primary school need be short of a French link school.
There is also a scheme to link 1000 schools via 'visioconference' proposed by Xavier Darcos.
I now have two contacts (non commercial - one is at JANET COLLABORATE, and one at Westminster LEA) who can assist schools (who are already linked with a French partner school) to set up their VC equipment to link to their partner school depending on the various technical requirements of their particular LEA, grid, and so forth. Please ask me to pass you on if you are in this situation or know anyone who is.

ALL - The Association for Language Learning
More help is at hand for your CPD! As you all are Language teachers now, ALL is your professional association. Because of its independent status, ALL can also offer training and networking possibilities based on the pooled knowledge of good practice and excellent practitioners.
Individuals, such as ASTs, or groups can become members. E.g Primary schools or Languages departments can become group members of ALL.
You are invited to attend the ALL Spring meeting and AGM which will take place at the Norton Knatchbull School on Saturday 21st March, 9.00 to 13.00. The issue of transition KS2 to KS3 will be discussed by key speakers Kate Scappaticci and Pauline Sheath, Regional Subject Advisors. Publishers will be there too. Further details for registration etc. will be posted nearer to the time. Watch this space! If you are not a member already, have you thought of joining? There are five good reasons why you should become a member. For more information, see attached documents.
Projects/ideas
And finally, many of you have been telling us about the language projects and activities taking place in your schools. Please let us know if you an idea or activity to share with other teachers as we would love to hear about it and help you share information. Just drop us a line!

FUN & GAMES IN THE PRIMARY CLASSROOM
Following the success of the afternoon session in the Autumn, we have decided to organise another workshop, this time on ' Fun and Engaging activities in the Language Lesson' .
It will take place on the afternoon of Thursday 12th February 2009, at the Norton Knatchbull school from 13.30 to 15.45.
To register please contact Anne-Marie ASladden@nks.kent.sch.uk

ALL meeting 21st March 1009 NKS
We thought that primary colleagues would be interested in ALL, the Association of Language Learning, which is the national subject association for modern languages. ALL has an important representational role at meetings of key government panels (e.g. the DCSF Schools Implementation Group) where policy in languages education is discussed. It has however, no direct links to government policy agenda.
We are inviting you to come to the Kent branch of ALL spring meeting which is to take place on Saturday 21st March at The Norton Knatchbull school. We attach the agenda. We are charging a small fee, as ALL is an independent organisation run by teachers for teachers with no government funding.
You will see in the attached document that we have invited two key speakers to talk about transition KS2 to KS3. This particular session has been organised with our primary colleagues in mind. We have also invited some publishers including Pearson Education (Heinemann, who publish Tout le Monde). Attendance to ALL meetings can be added to your CPD portfolio.

NEWSLETTER AUTUMN 2006
Andrew Stapley, Huguette Hopkinson (Ashford), Jill Page and Laura Berduig (Shepway) welcome you all back after, hopefully, a good break.
Only one year to the 2009-2010 Primary Languages entitlement!
CNG meetings
Shepway are holding their CNG meeting on Wednesday 8th October 2008 at 4.00 p.m. at the Folkestone Academy.
The Ashford CNG meeting will be the next day, Thursday 9th October, 4.00 p.m. at the Norton Knatchbull School.
There will also be a CNG meeting in the Tenterden area, probably a fortnight later, venue and date to be advised.
It is important that all schools be represented in those meetings. They are the best way to keep informed about Primary Languages and provide an excellent platform for colleagues to share their successes and voice their concern and for networking.
Please let us know if you are coming so we have enough biscuits to go round!
Regional Support Group workshops
The Norton Knatchbull is in its third year as Regional Support Group centre for CILT, the National Centre for Languages.
We are offering the following workshops for the next two terms:
Wednesday 15th October 2008 – 4.00 p.m. How to exploit a book. This session will show you how to make the most of a book in a foreign language. There will also be the opportunity to look at a variety of books. Please note: as this is the first session in the year, there will be a prize draw with resources to be won!
Wednesday 17th December 2008 – 4.00 p.m. How to bring other cultures in the classroom. This covers the intercultural awareness strand of the KS2 framework.
Please let us know if you wish to attend as it helps us organise the hand-outs and refreshments.
Tout le Monde training
We have organised an afternoon training session for Tout le Monde, with an emphasis on Level 2 on Thursday 20th November 2008. It will start at 1.30 p.m. and end at 3.30 p.m. This session should also allow colleagues to share ideas on how to best use this package.
Staff Meetings
We have already got quite a few bookings for our staff meetings this term but there is room for more! So, if you would like us to come and talk to your colleagues about what the entitlement means, what the KS2 Framework is about, or if you want us to help your colleagues teach French using the Tout le Monde package for example, or if you have any other primary languages training requirements, then do not hesitate to contact Andrew or myself.
Outreach
We can also help teachers on an individual basis by doing some model teaching in your school and/or supporting him or her on an informal basis. If you feel that any of your colleagues could do with some help and support please contact Andrew or myself in Ashford or Jill Page in Shepway.
Assessment & monitoring
As we get nearer to the entitlement the need for monitoring and assessment becomes more pressing. Again we are happy to help. In particular, we can help schools with Asset Languages.
Video conferencing project
Andrew will be preparing a year 7 class for the next two terms to teach a year 5/6 class in a video-conferencing session. If you have video-conferencing equipment and would like to take part, please contact Andrew.
The actual session should take place end of January, beginning of February. The topic will be the weather.

SUMMER NEWSLETTER 2008
PRIMARY LANGUAGES NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2008
The Primary Languages team, Roger Baker, Jill Page, Andrew Stapley and Huguette Hopkinson wish to thank all their hard-working primary colleagues for their excellent progress in getting ready for the Primary Languages entitlement in 2009-2010.
Here is the latest news:
Lead Teachers
Our lead teachers Nathalie Hockey, Ashford 1, from Brook school and Nicola Thompson, Ashford rural, from Pluckley school, have been working hard on their projects. Nicola has organised video-conferencing with other schools and Nathalie has been helping local schools with outreach work and also sending information on how to establish links with schools abroad. Please do not hesitate to contact either of them if you are interested in video-conferencing or international links. As for outreach, can you contact Nathalie if you are Ashford 1 and Nicky if you are in Ashford Rural.
We are looking for another Lead Teacher for each cluster, if you are interested or would like more information please contact our Primary Languages advisor, Maureen Smith:
maureen.smith2@kent.gov.uk
And finally, we wish to congratulate Nathalie who has reached the final stages of the Primary Languages Teacher of the Year award organised by La Jolie Ronde. She has already received £800.00 worth of goodies for her school and if she wins she will get an all expenses paid trip to France for 30 pupils and 5 members of staff! Good luck Nathalie!
Foreign Language Assistant
We have a few hours to offer for free to schools with our French Foreign Languages Assistants, please contact Roger Baker if you are interested:
rbaker@nks.kent.sch..uk.
Regional Support Group Workshops
Our workshops have been better attended this year, so thank you for all of you who came, do not forget to put your attendance certificates in your CPD file! Also, one of the criteria for schools to get the Kent Accreditation is to show that teachers have had some form of Primary Languages training. We would love to see more of you next year.
We are now working on organising next year’s programme. These are a few we are considering offering:
Fun and Engaging lessons
PE and traditional dancing
ICT in Primary languages
International Links
Kinaesthetics and Interactive white board
Please let us know what you think and we would welcome any suggestions of topics or issues you might want to explore further. Please note that every session next year will contain a short element on staff development i.e. pedagogy, progression, transition, language learning skills etc.
Workshop venue and timing
We appreciate that twilight sessions are sometimes difficult to attend after a long day; we are going to offer one afternoon session in the autumn initially. We are also planning to do twilight sessions using some of your schools as the venue, as it will be easier for the staff of that school and other schools in the vicinity to attend. We would therefore like to hear from schools which would be willing to host one of our workshops.
Kent Accreditation
We have been very pleased this year to see more and more schools applying for the Kent Accreditation. If you are interested in applying, do not hesitate to contact us for a pre-meeting where we can go through all the criteria and help you in any way we can.
Staff Meetings
Thank you to all the schools which invited us to their staff meetings this year, we have already quite a few bookings for the autumn. We can come to your school to present the KS2 Framework and how to be ready for the entitlement and any survey inspection from Ofsted. We can also have a session on how to make the most of Tout le Monde, incidental language, use of flashcards and mini-flashcards etc.
Next year we are adding to our repertoire two sessions offering cross curricular opportunities: One on PE and traditional French dancing, and a session on poems, songs and phonics, which fits in nicely with the Primary literacy curriculum.
Please contact Andrew or me if you would like us to come to one of your staff meetings.
CNG Meetings
The next one will be in the autumn. It is very important that your school be represented at those meetings, either by the Primary Languages coordinator or another member of staff if they cannot come. They provide a unique opportunity for networking and it is an excellent platform for colleagues to talk about their successes and voice their concerns, and also to find out the latest in Primary Languages. We also welcome any representative from secondary schools as they can meet their primary colleagues and discuss transition. And of course, we would welcome the input of any colleagues who are stakeholders in primary school education.
We are aware that the word ‘cluster’ might have to change as they are now called ‘partnership’, so watch this space to find out what new acronym we concoct!
Language projects
If any schools are planning to teach or would like to do a project in a language other than French, please contact Andrew. He also teaches Italian and Spanish and would be happy to help.
Resources
NKS story books
We have quite a few story books that we could come and present to your staff or for short term lend, please contact us.
La Petite Presse.
I have ordered last year’s issues of a Primary Languages new magazine called ‘La Petite Presse’ which comes with a CD and teachers note, and will report on that particular resource at our next CNG meeting.
Primary Languages Direct – Ezine - CILT, our national agency for language teaching, produces a magazine specially aimed at primary schools, do have a look, it is full of useful information.
